They cover the eye of ra that represent the sun, whilst highlighting the left eye, the eye of Horus, the all seeing eye, the third eye. All self caused black eyes are also the left eye, they are obsessed with the pineal gland, third eye.
If you look at a cross section of a pineal gland it is the Eye of Horus
