The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. — Psalm 18:2
Have you ever met someone in your life that filled so many different roles for you? For example, maybe it was a family member who played a significant role in your life. Perhaps they were a father, mother, aunt, or uncle. Maybe they provided for you, gave you shelter, gave you transportation, or many other things. Sometimes those people help in paying debt or other things that may happen in life.
It’s always nice when you have people like that who you can recall being there for you. You can think of that person and think of all the wonderful things that they have done for you and how they helped you. You know without a doubt when you go to them that they will do anything they can for you. That seems to be the idea of what David is saying in this verse of Psalm 18.
He talks about who God is to him. He calls God his rock, or the source of his safety. David says God is his fortress or his defense. He calls God his deliverer. In other words, God is the one that provided a rescue plan when he needed to be saved. He continues by saying God is his God, or the God who is active and lives. David says that God is his strength and source for the times he finds himself weak.
Through each statement, David talks about all the goodness of God and of what God has done for him. He speaks of God’s protection, God’s provision, God’s salvation, God’s strength. In other words, in each and every situation that we could possibly find ourselves in, the answer is God! If you find yourself in trouble, God is the answer. If you find yourself in sin, God is the answer. When you find yourself weak, the answer is God!
Our world spends countless hours searching for the answer to all the issues in life. We seem to look for self-help books, political leaders, celebrities, and others for the answer. The answer is simple. We don’t need all the things in this world. The answer is God!
