I've been pondering this very subject lately, especially as it applies to people in my life who suffer cognitive dissonance regarding current issues. The same people who refuse to see or who deny the obvious are the same types who never seem to be able to admit when they're wrong about anything, who I can't recall ever hearing them apologize for losing their temper or making mistakes, or having been wrong about something. I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong. Not saying I'm perfect, but I believe it's our ability to put our ego aside and be comfortable with changing our previously held convictions that make us grow and develop (improve ourselves).
Well said. I think people who can do what you describe are much happier as well.
