Yeah this is more for people with multiple channels to have a single ID across them all, kind of like how in City of Heroes they added a global handle tied to your account to allow way easier messaging between people no matter which character you were playing at the time (previously messaging was tied to the character names and was cumbersome if you didn't know which character your friend was logged in as at the time.)
