I think Trump announced that he had removed McCarthy's controllers when he endorsed him for speaker and said he would do a great job.

I do remember how McCarthy was the first to meet with Trump after Biden's installation, before everyone else started trying to kiss Trump's ring again. It was so sudden that I had always wondered if Trump had made him an offer he shouldn't refuse.
