Asking for help. I would like to start homeschooling my Son. What steps and what program should I look to.
🐸 HELP a FROG 🐸
I would like to do it ASAP. I can’t do the government programming anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frens!
As someone who was homeschooled before the internet was full of resources… I promise, it’s so much easier than people think even back then.
What grade is your kiddo?
10th grade
So some of this might be super oblivious to you, but a lot of people don’t know so I’ll share the “build your own high school curriculum” info.
I’d recommend checking what your state’s high school graduation standards are, and looking into what end of year testing records you need (different states require different EOY tests) and base the education partially of covering what will be in that test. Also, figure out what your state’s high school transcripts are supposed to include and cover each “class” (it’s okay to allow your child to test out of a class, track that letter grade whether that’s their main focus or not.).
There are lots of great curriculums and resources out there. But even good curriculums don’t always align with what will be on the state tests or the exact classes you need for a high schooler’s transcript… So if the 10th grade EOY test has algebra 2 on it, you want to make sure you covered it.
I suggest checking out this page for EOY testing info, it seems to be a more modern version of what we referenced when I was growing up: https://hslda.org/post/three-types-of-year-end-assessments
Another thing recommend is grabbing a GED prep book (with practice tests) for your state and making sure you don’t miss covering anything in there. That generally shouldn’t be all you do, but it is good for avoiding blind spots.
This approach of “find what’s legally needed and make sure to learn it and document proof it was done” is a shockingly easy process once you know what’s legally required. I don’t know about every state, but in general the bar is set for public schools are insanely low. I think this is the case because everyone I’ve ever talked to that homeschooled found working outside the school setting generally get the same amount of education in a fraction of the time. And you can choose to either improve upon that education or use that to fast track them into completing it years ahead of schedule.
