REI Joins the Growing NRA Boycott
Outdoor supplies stores are dropping brands with ties to the NRA.

Even if you don't know Vista Outdoor by name, you probably know some of the brands they produce: CamelBak, Bushnell, Giro, among others, all brands that are big in the sporting goods world. And now, Vista is one the latest companies targeted in the growing boycott of the NRA.
As the Washington Post reports, half of Vista's profits come from "shooting sports," and the company is closely tied to the National Rifle Association:
Vista Outdoor’s business is divided into two branches: One is dedicated to outdoor products; the other is dedicated to “shooting sports,” which generates 54 percent of the company’s external sales revenue, according to its annual report. Its firearms brands include Savage Arms, which makes “modern sporting rifles” and lists a semiautomatic series of weapons on its website, and Federal Premium Ammunition, which sponsors NRATV. Vista Outdoor also is a large vendor at the NRA’s annual gun show.

Outdoor retailers REI and Canada-based Mountain Equipment Co-Op both announced that they would no longer carry any of the 50 brands produced by Vista. Both companies are co-ops; REI made the decision to break with Vista after thousands of its members (more than 24,000 as of this writing) called for it in an online petition, and Mountain Equipment cited a massive number of calls from its own members.
In response to the activism and organizing after the high school shooting in Parkland, FL, airlines, insurance, and car rental companies began severing their ties with the NRA, but the boycott of Vista signals a shift from focusing on the NRA specifically to including companies that sell firearms and financially support the gun rights group, either directly or through their propaganda channel, NRATV. REI is calling on other businesses to do the same and applauded "the leadership" of companies like Dick's and Wal-Mart that are imposing strict policy for gun sales and dropping some styles of firearms completely

Thanks for this context! I do not like REI. They are expensive, too.
