Interestingly, I drove past a Ford dealer today and noticed they had put all their F150 Lightnings and Mach-e’s out near the road promoting them. It wasn’t an insignificant number. No one wants them.
I find the idea of them interesting (technology and power), but the batteries hold them back. The mining is highly destructive to the land and they are mined with child labor. Additionally, who would trust a battery in an ev that was more than 5 to 8 years old? Meaning used EV’s will be near worthless; making them, essentially, disposable cars.
Disclaimer: I own a V8 as well as an EV. I like them both.
Saw a report recently that the EV sales pipeline is stuffed full of 90 days worth of inventory. By comparison, gas cars have about 60 days inventory. They've got too much inventory. Topping that death blow off, Tesla is taking two-thirds of all EV sales because they've lowered prices to suck up all the demand. Tesla makes a profit on every car at those lower prices. The rest of the industry is losing money on every car at any price.
So that may be a big factor in pushing the Lightning and Mach-E. Expect great discounts, 0% financing, etc. to move that inventory.
I don't care about the "mining is destructive to the land" argument. So is steel mining, oil mining, it's all bad if you look at it with that bias. I want a car/truck that works correctly and reliably. The Earth will be fine. Kids need jobs too, they build character.
Battery age is a bit of a worry, but I know a guy with a 12 year old Tesla and he says it is still going strong... so what is the true lifespan of these massive battery packs? I don't think we know yet. Certainly some of them die early, and yes they are expensive and probably bankrupt the car. But if the battery lasts 15-20 years, that's probably lifespan for 80% of the cars on the road. I suspect a new Tesla could make it 20 years, knowing how they are researching battery tech.
Ultimately, in 100 years, gas powered cars are going to be a novelty. You won't really want one for your daily driving. I love my V8, but the EV is way more convenient and takes zero maintenance other than tires.
I had a job when I was 10. I was not abused, I enjoyed my job. I see it as a major failure of the USA to outlaw child labor, so I’m not about to believe the propaganda that other countries are abusing their kids by giving them something productive to do.
I started working in an upholstery store at age 9. I chose to look for work and I enjoyed my job as well. Would have been much different if my boss didn't care about me and I was forced to dig materials out of the ground when I was 6 years old! You are quite out of touch with what's going on. Best you do more research before you make anymore stupid comparisons! Also...pretty sure it's not "propaganda" as I saw the video of the slave labor going on in S Africa's mines.

Reality is a cruel mistress.

They are using small children to dig the cobalt out of the ground by hand...it's slave labor!
"They are" splattering small children--- probably, the lucky ones, are blown to fine mist--- all over the rubble in Canaan.
