The standard 5.56 NATO AR-15 is fully capable of shooting 22LR ammo. Just swap out the bolt carrier and the magazine. It will not be as accurate as a 22LR rifle, why? The 22LR is a .222 caliber, and your AR-15 is designed for .223 (5.56mm = 223 cal)
The 5.56mm NATO has a higher chamber pressure than rifles specially called .223. Probably works fine, but no guarantees. So you probably want the 556 over the Wylde or .223
Other popular 22 calibers are 22Mag, and 22-250, and .223; all of which were legal deer hunting rifles at one point.
Imho, the 22LR conversion kit (~$200) is way fun and a huge cost saver for practice on the AR, and plinking
Thank you for sharing this.
This is what I have, and I love it. ~$170 online. Odds are your local range, or gun dealer has them on the shelf for similar. CMMG is pretty well known for this product.
It will rapid fire pretty well, ONE suggestion - if you let your rifle rest on the Magazine, odds are better than average it will jam. The magazine tolerance is not designed to bear the weight of the rifle. So, either support it using your hands, or on something that is not the magazine - then as fast as you can toggle the trigger, you will fire off a 22LR. Lots of fun, and way cheaper than burning 556/223 which is ~10x more expensive.
Have fun, fren.
