The split motive is supposedly to represent the culture of both countries, which makes it weird to include a plane. Back in 1976 if you asked a Swede what he knows about America, most people would say the twin towers, the white house, route 66, mount Rushmore, the gold rush or similar.
Modes or transportation makes very little sense as America back then imported a lot from Sweden back then, everything from trucks, trains to planes. I don't see why a partially Swedish organization, with the goal to promote Sweden would give credit to America for something Sweden does a lot better.
