Aberdeen, WA was a thriving logging town back in the day. Loggers flush with cash on payday would come into town for lots of naughty fun. Then came the Spotted Owl. They were always there. But all it took was some flat earth globalists to tag them as an indicator species touting that they could only nest in old growth timber (like an effing bird can read a calendar). It was a stake in the heart for that community. It was never a mystery to me that the birth of grunge rock came from there from a kid who grew up in that environment.
