My buddy used to work on the cooling equipment for these server rooms. As severs got smaller they filled up the square footage with double or triple the servers. The only problem was, they now needed to water cool triple the equipment in the same space.
For scale, 90 megawatts is about the electricity consumption of 22,000 homes, according to a PEC report.
Data centers consumed 17 gigawatts of electricity in 2022, or about 4 percent of total U.S. consumption. This is projected to double to 35 gigawatts by 2030 (35,000 MW or enough power for 770,000,000 homes – Statista says there are only 144,000,000 homes currently in the USA).
