This is one time I agree with the process. Those medals should never have been awarded. Wounded Knee is a dark spot on the US Military, and always has been. The army was out for blood after the Battle of Little Bighorn and Custer's defeat. 250 men (young and old), women and children were killed at Wounded Knee. The army was there to enforce a ban on the Ghost Dance. They were also trying to disarm the Indians. I personally don't see the actions of the soldiers as "heroic".
I grew up not far from the Little Bighorn Battlefield. The story we learned as kids was way different than what they know to be truth now. The biggest reason is because no one bothered to listen to the Indian side. For instance, the Crow Nation asked for the army's help because the Sioux and Cheyenne were trying to run them off their lands after the gubmint took the badlands from the Sioux for the Black Hills gold.

Slippery slope - just like Butler. History is His Story for a reason.
