As of 2:57 PM eastern US time on September 16, 2024 there are literally HUNDREDS of military aircraft flying over the continental United States...

I haven't been following lately, but if IIRC from my planefag days, this is hardly unusual. Probably corresponds with heavier training which happens every year.

Now if there were like 500 aircraft up and most were not trainers, that would be something to note. Couple hundred including trainers is not a notable occurrence IMHO. Also keep in mind that there are always significant amounts of .mil aircraft not transponding for whatever reasons. Just a percentage of them suddenly deciding not to go dark and the numbers are boosted without a single additional jet in the air.
