We have the canned goods, the dry goods, the water filter, the ammo, an emergency trunk filled with everything you can think of—drugs, first aid, lanterns, etc.
But I’m sitting here in the dark for hours after a transformer blew in our small village. Totally failed our dry run. I can’t get the lanterns working. Our batteries seem corrupted and I don’t have the right kind of batteries in some instances. And I need a lantern that uses another kind of energy too.
Big fail! I’m off to Home Depot when the lights come on to truly get prepared. Glad this happened today. I thought we were in good shape. Didn’t make it an hour.
I do practice runs with all my generators. I g have two gas ones for the initial phase, a diesel next and a propane powered one. They will all run the well pump and I have a plan to do everything in a short time like watering the horses and chickens, doing laundry, charging anything and keeping the fridges and freezers cold. I have a mini fridge that I can put frozen bottles in with our daily stuff so it doesn’t need to run all the time. We heat only with wood so no worries there. Stay ready! I just wait for the lights to go out to switch over.
I suggest getting a hand pump installed on your well head.
I thought that hand pumps work only down to about 30 feet?
I just searched it. It says up to 325 ft.
