Since, as this whole news story has made obvious, Greenland is not independent and is under Danish authority. They were granted homerule in 1979, being able to set their own policies and such, but the land still belongs to Denmark.

No, part of the original agreement was that Greenland could hold a referendum to leave Denmark and become independent at any time.
The issue is that they can't financially support themselves and would need another nation to be their financial benefactor.
There is a Greenland election in April and a referendum on independence could easily be added into that election.
Once independent, Greenland is free to negotiate with the US.
That's my understanding.
