Sturges berated Donald Pleasance, a sixty-mission RAF radio operator and POW, on set about how a POW would act. Charles Bronson and Jim Garner, also vets, had a “discussion” with Sturges about respect. Sturges’ behavior on set changed abruptly for the better. Ironically, Sturges himself was a veteran.
