Aaron Vaughn was a U.S. Navy SEAL, part of the elite SEAL Team 6 (DEVGRU), who was killed in action on August 6, 2011, during the downing of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan’s Wardak Province.
That incident — sometimes called the Extortion 17 tragedy — was the single deadliest day for U.S. forces in the Afghanistan War, killing 30 Americans (including 17 Navy SEALs), 7 Afghan soldiers, and an Afghan interpreter. Vaughn was 30 years old, a husband, and the father of two young children at the time of his death.
He was known for his deep Christian faith, his fierce commitment to country, and his drive to be a SEAL from an early age. His parents later became vocal about issues related to military rules of engagement and the circumstances surrounding Extortion 17.
SEAL Team 6 members were put on a slow, vulnerable helicopter with inadequate support, their mission details leaked, or that they were targeted in retaliation for the killing of Osama bin Laden earlier that year.
