Your phone is a small tablet computer. If you "root" your phone it means you basically reinstall a clean operating system while giving yourself root (admin) access within that OS. Therefore, you gain complete control over your device... or at least more control than you had originally.

The makers of the phones really do not want you to do this, since they have all kinds of crap installed on the phone that is for their benefit, not yours.

The best option is to buy a phone with an open source operating system that was designed to give you admin access in the first place... which is what I myself am waiting for.
