Right, but I think that makes some assumptions about their psychology that isn't necessary true for all of the left-wing populists.
They clearly have a herd mentality, but, I would wager that many of them think of themselves as "free thinkers", "critical thinkers", or whatever. Their intentions are often good (they genuinely think they are right and helping progress society), they are just deeply misguided (i.e., believing that socialism is good), and they often falling into the trap of de-humanzing people + proceeding to dox them.
So, once they see that right-wing populism does achieve good, say, through the accomplishments of Trump as president, they begin to question their beliefs. That's all it takes. Alternatively, fake news might turn some of them too. It'd be worth asking some former Bernie-bros (and now pro-Trumpers) about it.
An example of a Bernie-bro turned Trumpster is journalist/YouTuber H. Goodman (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDB5XReUyyqt-FTNdkzFN-A ). I haven't watched too much of his content, but, there might be something in there about why he converted.
