Another reason to not vaporize the planet would be to end up inhabiting it openly. Tangentially, a reason to not reveal yourself and instigate open combat is 7 billion+ resisting and setting your goal on fire, literally.

I am a skeptic too btw and am more apt to believe aliens are angels and demons, but I also would not be surprised if there are other lifeforms. However, the great filter theory is just as plausible imo.
