They're not necessarily something you want to seek out, lol. But when they happen, they happen. I can only speak to the very narrow spectrum of NDE due to medical issues, nothing really exciting or dramatic like war or car accidents. I will say this though: I was peaceful and completely at ease each time it happened. And I was not religious at the time, and actually didn't become so until years afterwards.
Without details, what happened to me was actually about as close of an analogy to a hypothetical COVID death one could have. Eerily so (think flus). If people knew what it was like, I suspect fewer would fear COVID, even if it was real. ;)
Frankly, a lot of stuff I've read about the psychedelic experience touches on similar themes. However, I'd guess the brain is less of and active participant in a true NDE, and more of a passenger.
