Fredrick Douglas, the former slave (as in REAL slave) said, "When a slave sees a free man, he can think one of two thoughts. Either, there is a free man, why am I not free like he is? Or, there is a free man, why is he not a slave like me?"

A person can think one of those thoughts or the other, but not both.

Harriet Tubman said of the Underground Railroad, "I could have freed more slaves, if only I could have convinced them that they were slaves."

Imagine the level of psychological damage it would take for these things to be thought. And that was real, hardcore slavery, not simply being lied to about the common cold and flu season.
