The anger and frustration make it difficult to not lash out or gloat. These people have amends to make. The wronged party withholding time and attention is one way to help such people realize they have been out-of-line with their treatment of their friends and/ or family. The fishing metaphor is a good one. You can't pull too hard, but you also can't 'let them off the hook' by forgiving too easily. We have to be strong.
