Tbh helmets are like masks. The probability of a helmet on a bicycle preventing serious damage is statistically nil. There are so few bicycle deaths each year its ridiculous (a few hundred per year). As more people wear helmets the number of deaths with helmets has risen, and overall deaths have not gone down at all.

I personally have been riding a bicycle daily for decades, even when I lived in NYC. I tried a helmet one day when mountain biking and never wore one again. I have never known a single person who got hurt because they weren't wearing a helmet, or didn't get hurt because they were wearing one. That doesn't mean its never happened, but all together (stats and anecdotes) this adds up to it being very rare if it happens at all.
