They were socialists, however your mother is partially correct because there's a profound difference between nationalist-socialism and communism, depending on if your nationalist leader is a nationalist in more than name only (actually cares for his nation).

It's the difference between having a totalitarian ruler who loves his nation and a totalitarian ruler who loves looting the people.

I wouldn't mind having a nationalist socialist totalitarian leader rule us for ten years because he could sort all of our problems out overnight: do what needs to be done with or without the approval of the Bolshevik brainwashed sheeple. The wall would be built with zero fucks for people's property rights. Illegals would be deported with zero care of the crying SJWs. Traitors would be lined up against a wall with zero fucks given about the UN's feelings. Infrastructure renewal projects would go ahead with zero fucks given if it makes a breed of slugs feel displaced. Liberal academics would be given boots and shovels and expected to do productive works.
