I have found that people that have to deal with the harsh realities of the world tend to be more misanthropic than average, not less.
But while they may not have the highest of opinions of humanity in general they also tend to be more positive in regard towards their ability to influence people, they're just a lot more aware of what it will actually take to do this and knowing how much comes from experience...
Their whole mindset is angled towards making the only surprises be positive ones so they anticipated it being even worse and the amount of people being able to think and how fast they have started to is more likely to be a pleasant surprise rather than lack of speed being unanticipated...
The fact that everything is going so slowly and every step of it seems to be according to plan is sort of a dead giveaway...
