I personally believe that it's more about who controls the global market of high-speed internet of the next generation, which is 5G, and China wanted to grab it all just for themselves.
The worries about 5G are mostly related to the high-frequency radiation emmitted by the towers, which could damage tissues from a far longer chance than the currently employed 4G emmitters do. And, of course, there's the risk of further censorship of online communications, which would be far more blatant if China managed to gain more ground.
I'm personally more worried about the surveillance than everything else. Did my research and don't think that the signal itself is more damaging than the usual.
