In my simple engineer's mind, giving a patient hydroxychloroquine is like giving a soldier a gun. You need to issue the guns before the battle; they need to have ammunition; if you bury your soldiers in guns then they will get crushed by the weight.

So several types of hydroxychloroquine trials were set up. Some used hydroxychloroquine by itself. The trial was not successful because a cocktail of drugs is required - the ammunition.

Another trial was set up to administer hydroxychloroquine to patients who were already really sick in hospital. At that point the position had been overrun and the guns arrived too late.

Finally, they dropped many tons of guns on to the waiting soldiers who were crushed by the shear weight - an overdose.

Those results were published and hydroxychloroquine was discredited.
