It happened. Now maybe she was lying to me? Why the hell would an older nurse lady taking her grandkid to the park make up some fucked up lie like that? And tell it to a stranger at the park? I'm only repeating what she told me and yeah, I guess she could be lying. The amount of detail she gave indicated to me that she wasn't lying. She seemed disturbed about the information, too. Wouldn't surprise me that someone would want to get that kind of thing off their chest or at least see how others react just to make sure not everyone has lost their moral compass.
edit: Also, I didn't realize insurance fraud on behalf of a major hospital was like, super suspect. At the beginning of COVID there were stories of hospitals marking deaths as COVID in order to get federal money. Moving terminally ill patients to the COVID ward and killing them off then marking the death as COVID doesn't seem out of the realm of possibilities, especially in this state. It's wicked here. This is the same state that just passed a law for human composting, ffs.
