What is happening reminds me of the scene in which Joanna (Katherine Ross) visits her friend Bobbie (Paula Prentiss), who has been replaced by a robot. Fearing the worst, Joanna literally runs a knife into Bobbie's abdomen, at which point Bobbie starts to "break down." Repeating the same statements over and over, trying to pour coffee into a cup and missing, going around in circles, etc.

It's like a chaos switch has been thrown.
