For basic office type applications such as communications, or working on Microsoft Office (Libre Office is an open source free alternative used on linux) it should work perfectly. I only encounter problems on software with proprietary software, which can be solved with the use of wine, try it out on a virtual machine if you're not sure you want to commit.

EDIT: If you end up really liking it, they're starting to come out with more linux based phones every so often. There's many alternatives to IOS, and android OS that are more similar to your regular phone experience. I intend on switching reasonably soon.
