Gastonia NC. Near the pivotal Battle of Kings Mountain.

Detachments of Patriots, without an overall commander, crush the Loyalists. Precursor of the modern "Rule of LGOPS." Despite the Loyalists holding the high ground, they allowed themselves to become surrounded. They were caught by surprise. Never erected defenses. Hubris. Loyalists attack with desperate bayonet charges. Patriots strategically fall back to protection of woods, then counter attack using cover and movement. Loyalists overshoot. Brit Major Ferguson refused to surrender. Shot down a Patriot who demanded the unavoidable surrender. Patriots killed Ferguson in response. No quarter for Loyalists until a second white flag was accepted. Battle was a massive turning point in the War of Independence. Ironically, in a mirror fashion, the exact opposite outcome occurred at a major turning point in the American Civil War (Rebellion of 1860) at the Battle of Little Round Top, when the Union (Patriot) forces defeated the Rebels (Loyalists in 1776 were aiding the actual Rebel Brits). History is amazing, btw.

Interesting tidbit about Gastonia. Named after William Gaston. Rare Southern Federalist in territory dominated by the Democratic-Republicans. Owned slaves, but advocated abolition of slavery. Check out his speech. Also, interesting connection to JFK in that he was a Roman Catholic.
