Umm...most comms will be out if internet is affected. This includes cell networks. Unless you have a dedicated hardline for an "old school" telephone, most will be fucked. If an internet satellite can be affected, ALL comms satellites will be affected. Possibly the power grid, too, depending on the strength of the flare.

Edit: also, I highly doubt The Sun will cooperate with [their] plan. It's highly more likely that [they]'ll just cut the systems off and blame it on the sun.
