Thank you for this answer and yes I do mean modern humanism. Humanism in the sense you describe, ie self-actualization, self-evaluation, still had God as central. Averroes a Moorish scholar (d.1198), the father of humanism in the sense that he re-purposed Aristotelian thought, was persecuted for suggesting man had any autonomy or that God might not know 'the particulars'.
