Are you both using it as your default SMS app?
Personally I wouldn't use anything that ties into SMS. If you got wifi or pay for data you should be using a dedicated messenger app for sensitive topics.
Like Matrix, Jitsi, Session, Tox, etc etc. It's not as convenient because you can't expect everyone to have the same thing and knowledge of how to use what you use...
