You're right actually, I'm doing some calculations with MapChecking.com. The maximum coverage of 80,000sqm at the maximum 5 person per sqm can't go much higher than a crowd of 400,000, and those are unrealistic parameters that don't match aerial footage.
The most reasonable estimate is about 200,000 to 300,000 people, which is MASSIVE for Melbourne. I dunno how Topher Field got 450,000 but I'm hopeful it was by some other reasonable means!
