This photo is from the infamous Rothchild's Surrealist Ball, hosted on December 12, 1972, in their Château de Ferrières, Seine-et-Marne, France. The woman wearing the mask is Baroness Marie-Hélène de Rothschild (1927-1996), pictured holding hands with her husband Baron Guy de Rothschild (1909-2007). Here is her face without the mask at the Ball:

https://files.catbox.moe/lwuuft.jpg

I have spent some time looking for other angles of the mask to confirm if it is indeed transparent. I've only located one other angle, where it makes it difficult to tell. To me, the mask does look translucent around her eyes/nose and the flash exposed her.

"The invitations were written backwards, forcing the guests to use the assistance of a mirror to read them. The distinguished guests including Salvador Dali and Audrey Hepburn were asked to wear 'black tie, long dresses and surrealists heads.'

Upon arrival, the facade of the chateau was lit in red with the effect of making it appear to be on fire. The guests had to walk through black ribbons that were meant to mimic cobwebs and a labyrinth maze before entering the ballroom."

Stanley Kubrick's movie "Eyes Wide Shut," starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, was largely based on the Surrealist Ball. Kubrick died suddenly and unexpectedly after completing the editing. It was re-edited after his death, and it is believed that 22 minutes of the film were removed.
