I lived through the soviet collapse as a child and from what I remember and what my parents have told me, you're correct. Appear strong when you're weak.

It all started with rumors that the communist party was in trouble and losing power. That spurred patriotic movements all over the country that the already nearly bankrupt government had to expend ever more resources to contain. The propaganda and oppression got blatant and hysterical like it is now. However, once it was widespread knowledge that the regime was about to fall, it happened very quickly. The army sided with the people at the last minute and it was all over. I remember seeing tanks drive back toward Russia as they left.

It's especially hilarious that a good chunk of people who lived through it are still triple vaxxed sheep today.
