My understanding was at least one of the purposes was as a reset button for reality.

The really short lay version of it is you collide two particles together and this creates a sort of quantum marker in time. At any point you want to jump reality/earth/whatever back to that point in time you collide those same two particles again. The problem for them is it was a collapsing spiral deal in that the furthest they could jump time back to was the first time this was discovered, and any subsequent jumps back could only go as far as the next time they created a quantum marker after the first one. So the first time was jumping back 50 years, then the next time it was only 40 and so forth.

Anyways, that’s one of the theories I have seen about it. 😉
