I remember Ed Mcmahon doing commercials with Dick Clark for American Family Publishers, the Publishers Clearing House rival.

Johnny Carson appeared on Letterman in 1991, and as a joke brought out a big check for Letterman, saying Ed was busy and couldn't deliver it himself. On the check, in big letters, it said "Publishers Clearing House." (It's on youtube)

So, who knows. 🙃
