Reason: got the politician's name right

Jim Jones fought having a State Representative (Leo Ryan) from investigating his little cult nation for years.

Eventually, he had to relent and let people from the States in to see what was happening. They put on a good show, but ultimately the question arose:

"Does anyone want to leave?"

A few raised their hands.

You don't simply "leave" a cult.

But in front of the Senator and a few reporters, Jones relented and let them go.

Panicking throughout the night, he let the orders go through. He knew the jig was up, and that the people who left the cult were going to tell all about his crimes against humanity and how depraved the cult actually was.

He told his guards to go to the airfield and gun down everyone they could.

Then he ordered all his people to drink cyanide and strychnine kool-aide. That's effectively the origin of the "drink the kool-aide" phrase.

For the people who didn't drink (many were brain-washed and did) he ordered forcibly injecting them.

Only a few managed to hide among the bodies to live and tell the tale.

It ended when his guards all took their own lives, but not before Jones had his bodyguard shoot him in the back of the head.

Cults don't end without a bloody mess; of that, you can be sure.
