That's a much better cover story than:

"The virus does not exist at all. No virus exists. No virus ever has existed. We have been playing you all for fools for decades. Oh, by the way, those vaccines are not only useless, but they actually caused all the harm you have experienced your entire life. But hey, it's a good business model. Thanks for the money. My yacht needs a fresh coat of paint."
