Would people take a newspaper everywhere they go? What's the first thing they check when they get to their car in a parking lot; would it be a newspaper? What do people look at when they're waiting line at the DMV? I don't think a newspaper would fill that void.
There's something going on with cell phones and television that get people hooked. I don't know if it's the frequency of the light they put out, or if they emit some kind of subliminal messages that only the sub-conscience can hear. Maybe it's the cell tower electromagnetic waves themselves. But SOMETHING is being used in those devices to get people addicted to them and subsequently brainwashed.
