A lot of them, yes. Usually there are opening notes which tend to be small molecule ones that evaporate quicker like citrus. Then there are heart notes and base notes.

If you use something like versace eros flame, you'll smell the mandarin orange immediately, and after a few minutes the mandarin starts giving way to pepper and spice, and after a bit longer the vanilla and Tonka bean starts to really come out.

That's why to determine if you like a fragrance, spray it on your skin and smell it throughout the day.

Club de Nuit intense man, for example, smells like lemon bathroom cleaner for the first 15 mins or so with that artificial lemon note but gives way to a much nicer. Long lasting, and far reaching smokey note that developes quite well.

Key terms:

performance: how long a fragrance lasts. Some last an hour, some last a whole day albeit more muted and closer to the skin as time goes.

Projection: how far the scent travels from you. Skin scents stay close to your skin, but others can fill a room.

Sillage: the trail you leave behind. Some scents are like that food trail in scooby doo or tom and jerry that he can pick up from afar others stay within your space.

Concentration of essential oil to alcohol:

Extract/extrait/solid perfume – 20-30%

Perfume – 15-25 %

Eau de Parfum (EDP) – 8-15%

Eau de Toilette (EDT) – 4-8%

Cologne (EDC) – 2-4%

However when companies release an eau de toilette (edt) they usually change the noted a bit when they release an eau de parfum or perfume version, not just the concentration of oil, otherwise you could just spray more of the EDT and get the same effect as the EDP.

EDT usually projects more, perfumes tend to last long and har a closer skin scent based on the notes they use.

Hope this helps!
