  1. A promotion happens when a pawn gets to the back rank.
  2. It signifies the pawn becoming a MUCH stronger piece.
  3. While it can become any other piece except a king, this almost never happens. Almost always it becomes a Queen, the arguably most powerful piece on the board. Sometimes a rook, but we won't go into that.
  4. This means our little @q has all grown up and become a major threat and critical piece: @Q.
  5. This also happens late in the game, when defenses of your opponent have been broken and/or out maneuvered.
  6. Usually signifies endgame. Not many moves left.
