Vitamin D is EXCELLENT, and very, very necessary, so good points. With the vitamin D (try chaga), make sure that it is balanced with some good natural sources of Vit K (like dark poultry meat, free range medium eggs, sauerkraut, etc. The Vit K helps the body send the Calcium (natural by-product of Vit D absorption) into the bones, instead of the bloodstream (Ca2’s primary purpose is blood clotting after a wound’s signalling of the histamine response, so any EXCESS needs to go into the bones). However, since Calcium inhibits Iron absorption, space out the food intake so that Vit D/Calcium/etc concentrates are eaten a few hours apart from the iron-rich foods.
Also, there are classes under the umbrella GLA:D that are exercises geared towards those trying to avoid knee and/or hip replacements. There are different levels to accommodate each person. See if there are any in your area. Athletic taping may greatly assist your friend(s) before each class so as to allow the exercises to be performed with significant pain reduction. Taping is temporary, though.
