What's more earth's magnetic field which serves to redirect or dampen out many of the solar forcing events away from mid latitudes and more toward the polar regions has been declining for quite some time in a significant way. This means that solar forcing events that 200 years ago would not hit mid latitudes in a significant way are now able to reach down to these lower latitudes and thus dump energy into these cyclonic (and pre cyclonic) storm systems / depressions.
