Ephesians 2:2

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

When Adam ate the forbidden fruit, he lost his dominion to the serpent.

Satan usurped Adam and is in control to a certain extent on a temporary basis.

He will be bound for 1000 years once Christ returns and then cast into the lake of fire on judgment day.
