Republic of China (now Taiwan) was fighting a 2 front war between the communist CCP and the Japanese. China didn't willingly go commie, they had a stupid ignorant peasant population that was starving and went to the commies in the hope of having more food not knowing the consequences. As Mao's army and resources grew, more of China was taken under its control while the Republic of China was fighting off the Japanese and trying to save its country.
